Commonly known as the didjeridu, the yidake is the original instrument made and played by the Yolngu people. In this seminar you will learn about the yidaki, what defines it, why they are different from didjeridus, how they are made and played, including various creation stories. The seminar will be delivered by Jeremy Cloake, one of the world's leading non-Aboriginal experts on the subject. Jeremy has been working with the Yolngu for over 16 years, specifically with the yidaki. He is respected world-wide for his expertise as a yidaki player and teacher of it. The exhibition will be of yidaki from Yirrkala art centre, the home of the instrument. Yidaki will be available to be viewed, played and purchased with full documentation supplied.

In the workshop you will learn various techniques used in yidaki playing and then combine them in to phrases so they can be played as rhythm. These techniques are very different to those used in didjeridu playing and are based on the articulatory phoenetics of Yolngu languages. Jeremy delivers this information in an easy to follow and fun way, meaning anyone can join this workshop and gain a lot from it. Many music principles are taught.
